We are excited to announce that original works of art entitled Four Seasons -Silver Glitter Edition- will be available TODAY, January 21st at 21:00 JST / 7:00 EST on our website. It is a prominent work of art stenciled with glitter by RoamCouch and spray-painted onto Hon-minoshi, considered one of the most graceful Japanese handmade papers. It was inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2014.

Only the artisans belonging to five studios are considered skilled enough to fall under Hon-minoshi qualification. These artisans must meet specific and strict requirements including materials, tools, and the manufacturing methods used.

If you are lucky enough to witness one of these creations, you would surely be surprised by the beauty of the collaboration between RoamCouch and paper maker Minotake KAMI Studio. Their techniques and professionalism surely put them in a class of their own.

While, over time, ordinary white paper has a tendency to gradually turn yellow, Hon-minoshi, with its high durability actually increases in whiteness after coming into contact with UV rays. Because of this trait, the expression of these works of art can improve with time. You would, therefore, be able to appreciate these artworks for up to several hundred years into the future.

The stencil sheets are extremely intricate and deteriorate after each use. This, combined with the laborious process of creating the Hon-minoshi results in small editions for each piece, in this case only three works of art being produced. Hon-minoshi has grains and wrinkles because the whole process is done by hand. These should not be considered flaws but unique variations of each piece.
